Unmanned aircraft systems will soon have real-time weather updates after the announcement of a partnership between The Weather Company and AirMap on Wednesday. This comes just weeks before Part 107 for UAS goes into effect.

Through this collaboration, The Weather Co., owners of The Weather Channel, and AirMap will provide real-time weather updates and information to operators of UAS. The Weather Co. will use AirMap’s airspace management system to provide unmanned systems with these updates. Rules in Part 107 require operators to be knowledgeable about aviation weather products and services, as they could help determine when and when not to fly their system in certain situations.

Ben Marcus, CEO of AirMap, issued this statement through a company press release:

“The availability of real-time hyperlocal weather data from The Weather Co. will help today’s drone pilots avoid hazardous and severe weather, and will be absolutely critical for safe, efficient flight planning and operations of more autonomous, beyond visual-line-of-sight drones.”

Mark Gildersleeve, president of business solutions at The Weather Co., added:

“As a result of this AirMap deal, we can help drone operators not only be in compliance with Part 107 regulations, but also be able to leverage precise and accurate, hyperlocal weather data to help guide decision making and help work towards the safety, efficiency and performance of their unmanned aircraft.”

The Weather Co. provides frequent updates on weather forecasts for more than 2 billion locations across the world. An average of 20 million forecasts are provided daily.
