Blue UAS Portal Launch

BLUF: The Blue UAS Portal is now open, providing manufacturers with a standardized entry point for Blue UAS certification. For companies already in the Green UAS process, there’s no need to reapply—completion of Green UAS still leads directly to Blue UAS Cleared, with AUVSI coordinating the handoff. For new manufacturers, the portal offers two pathways: pursue Green UAS for comprehensive assurance and automatic eligibility for Blue Cleared, or apply directly through the Blue UAS Portal if only Department of War compliance is required. This FAQ explains what the portal means for in-process participants and new applicants, and how AUVSI’s role as a Recognized Assessor streamlines both routes.

What is the relationship between Green UAS and Blue UAS Cleared?

Green UAS is AUVSI’s industry-led compliance program, aligned to the government’s Blue UAS standard. In July 2025, DIU formally recognized Green UAS as an accepted pathway to Blue UAS Cleared.

AUVSI is also a Recognized Assessor (RA) under the Blue UAS program, now providing a direct path on to the Blue UAS Cleared list.

This means:

  • Green UAS → Industry-led, comprehensive program covering Blue requirements plus additional assurance layers (corporate cyber hygiene, remote ops, connectivity). Successful completion leads to eligibility for inclusion on the Blue UAS Cleared list.
  • Blue UAS Cleared (via Recognized Assessor) → The official DoW designation. AUVSI, as a Recognized Assessor, can also work directly with companies that choose to pursue Blue UAS Cleared directly through the government’s portal.

I already started Green UAS with AUVSI. Do I need to also apply via the Blue UAS Portal?

No. If you are already in Green UAS, the most efficient way to receive certification is to continue as is. You do not need to duplicate an application in the Blue Portal. Once you pass Green UAS, AUVSI coordinates the package and handoff to the Blue UAS team for Cleared listing.

If I start fresh today, should I pick Green UAS or the Blue UAS Portal?

It depends on your goals and what your customers require.

  • Green UAS covers everything in the Blue UAS cleared plus additional layers like corporate cyber hygiene, remote operations, and connectivity risk.
  • Blue UAS Cleared is required only if you intend to sell to DoD or agencies that mandate Blue UAS Cleared.

Who performs the Blue UAS Cleared assessment?

Recognized Assessors (RA) — independent organizations approved by DIU — perform third‑party assessments to a common Blue UAS Standard and submit standardized reports. AUVSI is a RA and works with specialized partners (e.g., Dark Wolf, University of Tulsa, MTSI) where appropriate.

What if some of our components are already on the Blue framework/components list, but we also have proprietary parts (e.g., ground controller, GCS software)?

That’s expected — and both Green UAS and Blue UAS Cleared assessments are structured to avoid duplication of effort. Critical components already on the Blue list don’t need repeat testing; proprietary or not‑yet‑listed components are assessed by the Recognized Assessor to the Blue UAS standard and then submitted in a standardized report for the government’s certification decision.

  • No repeat testing: Any critical components that are already approved and listed within the Blue UAS framework do not need to be reassessed in either Green UAS or Blue UAS.
  • Focus on what’s new: Only proprietary or not-yet-listed components (such as a custom ground controller, GCS software, or unique payloads) are evaluated by a Recognized Assessor (RA).
  • Standardized process: The RA confirms compliance of those new elements against the Blue UAS standard and compiles the results into a standardized report.
  • Government decision: That report is then submitted to the government (via DIU/DCMA) for the Blue UAS Cleared decision.

This approach ensures efficiency, leverages existing approvals, and keeps the focus on the unique or untested elements of your system — whether you are going through Green UAS, Blue UAS, or both.

What are the steps in the Blue Portal?

  • Submit your product via the Blue Portal.
  • Select a Recognized Assessor, AUVSI is verified and included in the list.
  • The RA develops a scope and evaluates any critical components not yet on the list and prepares standardized reporting.
  • The government (DIU, transitioning to DCMA) renders the Blue UAS Cleared designation based on the standardized reporting and updates the list.

Are there different paths for U.S. vs. noncoveredcountry companies?

Yes. The portal differentiates Group A (U.S.) and Group B (non‑covered‑country) paths. Both may proceed via the portal; some may also be certified via an Empowered Agency nomination route. See the portal’s Detailed Process.

What’s the difference between Blue UAS Cleared and Blue Select?

They are distinct designations referenced by DIU communications. Always consult the DIU site for current definitions and lists. UAS solutions for the U.S. DoD.

How are components vs. platforms vs. softwareonly handled for Blue UAS Cleared?

The RA examines each submission against the Blue UAS standard. Platforms must show all critical components are Blue‑cleared or newly assessed; components/software can be evaluated individually and then reused across platforms where applicable.
