This week during CES 2019, USV company OceanAlpha unveiled its new Smart Jetboard FF I USV, which the company says can serve as both a lifebuoy and a jetboard.

Described as a “three-segment board,” the Smart Jetboard FF I is approximately one meter long, 0.8 meters wide, and weighs 13 kilograms. It utilizes a dual-jet pump with a battery life of 30 minutes and a maximum speed of five meters per second.

For use as a water entertainment device, the Smart Jetboard is equipped with direction and speed buttons that allows a user to lie comfortably and safely on the board, and navigate with ease.

OceanAlpha says that its Smart Jetboard is “easier to operate and much safer” than other similar jetboard products on the market, making it an option for a variety of use cases, as it is a good choice for individuals and water park operators to use on yachts, beaches, islands, and other aquatic sports, the company says.

OceanAlpha says that its Smart Jetboard used as a smart lifebuoy is also a better choice than a traditional foam lifebuoy, which has a limited throwing range and low accuracy, the company says. These factors can result in the loss of valuable time when trying to save someone’s life. But that isn’t an issue with the Smart Jetboard, OceanAlpha says, as the vehicle simply has to be thrown into the water and remotely driven to the drowning person. With a control distance of 500 meters, the vehicle is capable of carrying two adults.

The USV also saves valuable rescue time thanks to automatically turning on once it hits the water. Additionally, it can be used on both sides, and it has a self-righting function in case it is overturned by waves.

Much like its use cases as an entertainment device, the Smart Jetboard as a lifesaving device can also be used in a variety of environments, including swimming pools, reservoirs, and rivers and beaches, just to name a few.

“The Smart Jetboard is expected to partially replace the traditional lifebuoy and become one of the standard devices for major attractions, marinas and tourist destinations,” OceanAlpha says. “With entertainment and life-saving functions, the Smart Jetboard will be the first of its kind in the water entertainment equipment market.”
