During DSEI 2019 in London, Milrem Robotics unveiled its fifth generation THeMIS UGV, which is designed to help warfighters and enhance combat effectiveness.

The vehicle leverages the knowledge obtained during tests conducted in the US, Europe, and the Middle East, as well as a deployment in Mali in the French lead Operation Barkhane. Its architecture, safety, air transportability, power offload and other aspects all follow NATO STANAG standards.

“In 2015 we exhibited the first THeMIS concept here at DSEI in London. Now, four years later, after extensive testing with industry partners and NATO forces in very demanding environments we are proud to be back here and present a mature and robust product that will greatly enhance warfighting capabilities,” explains Kuldar Väärsi, CEO of Milrem Robotics.

“Our engineers have taken into account the feedback from different armed forces and carried it into the design creating a really robust and reliable tool to support dismounted troops.”

Described as a “multipurpose tracked vehicle,” the fifth generation THeMIS can be equipped with a variety of warfighting technologies such as weapon systems, tethered drones and IED detection devices. Having already been sought out for a number of payload integration projects, the UGV has had a dozen different systems integrated into it through collaborations with partners such as Kongsberg, FN Herstal, MBDA, and ST Engineering. Thus far, live firing tests have been conducted with five different weapon systems, including an anti-tank missile launcher.

Milrem says that it is also working to enhance the vehicle with autonomous functions including point-to-point navigation, obstacle detection and avoidance. Autonomous functions development is focused solely on mobility, not on weapon systems deployment, the company notes.

The first fifth generation THeMIS vehicles have been delivered to the Netherlands and Norway as logistic platforms. They are expected to carry gear and supplies with an option to be integrated with additional warfighting equipment.
