CA State Senator Allen Emerges as Autonomous Vehicle Thought Leader

Arlington, Va. - Earlier this week, California State Senator Ben Allen (D-26) introduced a bill calling for the State Secretary of Transportation to create an advisory committee tasked with leading the way on the state’s autonomous vehicle policy formulation. AUVSI is encouraged by Sen. Allen’s leadership on this issue, and congratulates him for pushing California to join the many other states who have already created similar autonomous vehicle advisory councils.

Autonomous vehicle (AV) technology is not only innovative and cutting-edge, but also capable of providing myriad social benefits. Incorporating AV into existing transportation networks has the potential to reduce greenhouse gases, decrease traffic fatalities, link existing food deserts to grocery providers, and create sustainable jobs, among many other benefits. Sen. Allen deserves praise for recognizing the promise AV holds, and AUVSI stands ready to assist in formulating responsible and forward-thinking AV policy in the state of California.
