AUVSI Applauds NETT Council for Recognizing Importance of Industry-Government Collaboration in Advancing Emerging Technologies
ARLINGTON, Va. – Brian Wynne, president and CEO of the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI), released the following statement on the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT)’s Non-Traditional and Emerging Transportation Technology (NETT) Council’s guidance document, “Pathways to the Future of Transportation,” published to the Federal Register on July 28, 2020:
“AUVSI supports the NETT Council and its important work of identifying and resolving hurdles impeding the full integration of new and emerging technologies, including unmanned systems, into our transportation infrastructure. It is our hope the continued work of the Council will help the Department of Transportation keep pace with the rapidly advancing unmanned systems industry so these technologies can be utilized to their fullest extent and innovation can flourish.
“We especially appreciate that the Council recognizes the importance of industry-government collaboration. Thus far, industry-government collaboration has been critical in fostering innovation and advancing the unmanned systems industry. We must continue to work together towards enabling regulations that will allow unmanned systems operators to tap into the full safety and operational benefits that this technology has to offer.”
The NETT Council, established in March 2019 by Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao, is an internal deliberative body at DOT tasked with identifying and resolving jurisdictional and regulatory gaps that may impede the deployment of new technology. The Council’s “Pathways to the Future of Transportation” document provides an overview and operational framework for the Council and details how the Council will engage with outside stakeholders moving forward. The full document is available at www.transportation.gov/nettcouncil.
