NASA is seeking breakthrough airspace designs and concepts of operations that will enable a variety of aircraft, including unmanned systems, to navigate the friendly skies in the near future.

The new Sky For All challenge is intended to generate ideas for a day about two decades from now, when 10 million manned and unmanned vehicles fly in the National Airspace System every day. The top three winners will split a cash pool of $15,000.

“Given the great complexity and scale of the of the overall objective, NASA is reaching out to the problem-solving community, asking innovators to cast aside the restraints of the current transportation model and develop component concepts and technologies that will enable the transition from the present system to the airspace of the future,” NASA says on the competition Web page.

The system will need to be able to scale up and down as conditions warrant and do so automatically. It also needs to be safe from cybersecurity attacks.

“Innovators who participate in this challenge will be asked to disregard current transportation infrastructure and constraints and use a clean-slate approach to conceptualize their designs, concepts of operations, and component technologies,” NASA says.

The deadline for entry is Feb. 26. For more information, visit https://herox.com/SkyForAll.
