 Update: July 27, 2015

Greetings, AUVSI Hampton Roads Chapter members!

A few weeks ago, I attended our Association's Board of Directors' / Strategic Planning Meeting in New Orleans, site of next year's AUVSI national (Xponential) event.
I have attended a number of these meetings during my tenure with our organization but I have to tell you, -this- meeting was more productive & more energized than any of the past meetings I have attended. Refreshing!

What made this meeting different was the high level of communication about our need for AUVSI to "pivot" in response to a rapidly-evolving robotic market that has suddenly become influenced by smaller UAS ("quads") and driverless cars, two phenomenon poised to impact our lives in ways we only -imagined- a few years ago.

For forty (40) years, AUVSI has led the fight to create unmanned systems awareness and adoption by DOD. More recently, it has spearheaded federal legislation that is allowing safe integration of UAS in the national airspace system, and AUVSI's education programs are "best of breed" proving grounds for your engineers that will drive robotic technology well into the 21st century.
To remain relevant, AUVSI now needs to focus sharply on where the industry is leading us, rather than where we have been. Without ignoring those proud roots, we must redouble efforts to improve the adoption and use of unmanned systems, especially those that serve the vast fledgling civil and commercial markets. Thus now, AUVSI's leader has been tasked with ensuring that our organization is The Voice for unmanned systems, with the following vision to guide their (and, our) actions::

"We envision a planet where people's quality of life is enhanced through safe & ethical implementation of automated systems. Our members take on the responsibility of facilitating the development of technology solutions and their responsible implementation throughout society."

Join me in support of our evolving organization; it is what we make of it. Get involved, communicate with your friends and neighbors, and contribute to the groundswell of voices that can make a difference to policymakers and lawmakers who we need on our side to keep growing our industry. Together we, as AUVSI, can make a difference & help the future arrive sooner.

Stay tuned for announcements about a local meeting.

Kind regards,

Jay Willmott

Noteworthy News From Our Region

Past Chapter President Jerry Wright participated in the recent “Drone and Space Law Seminar” in Wise, Virginia sponsored by Wise County Bar Association and the Wise County Chamber of Commerce. The seminar was designed to provide information about legal aspects of unmanned systems and the current regulations at both the state and federal levels.

VA Senator Mark Warner opened the seminar with a welcome through Skype, and was followed by several panels of both private practice legal experts as well as deputy state attorneys general.

The seminar concluded with a business opportunities panel that included Jerry Wright, Nexus Technology Services; Liz Povar, Virginia Economic Development Partnership; and Shyam Chidamber, a director of Flirtey, a New Zealand company participating in the July 17 medical supply event.  Closing remarks were provided by Virginia Secretary of Technology (and Chapter Member) Karen Jackson. Our Chapter was founded in the mid-1990's to serve the needs of defense and industry technologists who supported the unmanned systems development with (primarily) U.S. Navy, Air Force, and NASA agencies in our region. Our growing membership base includes a number of academic institutions as well as industry proponents, many of whom are quite active in AUVSI activity in Richmond and in nearby Washington, D.C.

Come join us in shaping the future of unmanned technology. We look forward to seeing you at an upcoming Chapter event!
