Function:
Directs and manages all aspects of the Coating business unit including Engineering, Operations, and Maintenance.  Management responsibilities include staffing, planning, organizing, budgeting, quoting, process development, production, quality assurance, equipment maintenance, and cost reduction activities.
Coating Engineering:  Responsible for assigning engineering resources, scheduling workload, and providing technical leadership for the Coating Engineering group.  This involves setting priorities and providing direction to team members to accomplish company objectives, leading technical teams and coordinating engineering activities for design, development, and implementation of new coatings and processes, establishing process controls to achieve high standards of quality and process yields, promoting continuous improvement and R&D programs to enhance coating performance and reduce cost, and providing cost estimates and technical proposals to support business development. 
Coating Operations:  Responsible for assigning coating resources, scheduling workload, and coordinating with the Production Planning and Control Department and Program Management to ensure on-time deliveries.  Also responsible for assigning in-process inspection resources and implementing quality standards for the coating department including surface quality inspection, transmission and reflectivity measurements, environmental testing, implementing process controls, and tracking performance to ensure high process yields and high standards of quality and workmanship.
Coating Maintenance:  Responsible for assigning coating maintenance resources, establishing preventative maintenance programs, implementing hardware and software upgrades, and developing coating equipment upgrade plans to support company objectives.
The Coating Manager is the key person responsible for product development, product quality, product delivery to schedule, and product cost.  The key metrics associated with this position are Customer Returns, First Pass Yield, Department Scrap, Shop Order Variance, Staff Turnover, Budget Variance, and Equipment Uptime.
Job Requirements:
Education:
Minimum BS degree in engineering or related discipline, preferably in physics, optics, materials science, electrical or mechanical engineering.
Work Experience:
10 years minimum experience in design and manufacture of thin film coatings;  5 years minimum management experience;  experience with IR coatings for military / defense applications preferred
Skills/Knowledge:
1.      Strong verbal and written communications skills.
2.      Hands-on experience in multiple conventional thin film deposition technologies (thermal and electron-beam evaporation, sputtering, chemical vapor deposition).
3.      Hands-on experience in pre-coat substrate cleaning methodologies.
4.      Hands-on experience in characterization of coating performance.
5.      Hands-on experience in coating design using a conventional software package.
6.      Strong leadership skills in technology development, production operations, and personnel development.
7.      Strong analytical and problem solving skills required.
8.      Strong organizational skills and attention to details required.
9.      Knowledge of military standards for coatings and quality standards for manufacturing including ISO 9000.
10.   Must have a security clearance to support classified government programs.
