This Week in the Unmanned Systems and Robotics World

Sharp Intellos has developed an unmanned ground vehicle that can serve as an autonomous security robot. The system can last for approximately eight hours thanks to two lithium batteries, and it is equipped with six cameras, a sensor that tells it to slow down or stop when it gets too close to a person or object, and it can also test air quality. The Kobi company has developed an autonomous lawn and snow blower. The system, which is named after the company, is capable of returning to a docking station on its own when it needs to recharge, and it also has anti-theft software to prevent anyone from stealing it for their own personal use. Driverless cars are popping up everywhere, but researchers at the University of Washington Bothell (UWB) are working developing autonomous tricycles, which could serve as a cheaper and more ecofriendly solution in the world of autonomous driving. A team led by Tyler Folsom successfully tested a tricycle equipped with autonomous technology back in August. If everything goes well, the tricycles could eventually become a ride sharing service similar to Uber and Lyft. (New Atlas)

Nobody likes cleaning up pools, so how about using the Moobi system? The Moobi, which is similar to the Roomba vacuum cleaner, is capable of not just cleaning your pool of waste and debris, but it can also dispose of everything it collects while charging. The system can also analyze water quality. (Wired)

Fox 11 has begun to use UAS to capture and gather news. The system, called the SKYFOX, has two FAA regulated pilots that will operate it. Fox 11 is a part of the Sinclair Broadcast Group, which currently has six of its news stations using UAS technology, with plans of expanding that number to 40 by the end of next year. (Fox 11 News)

Students at the Accra Institute of Technology (AIT) in Ghana have created their own driverless vehicle. The vehicle was showcased at the school’s Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Expo and Exhibition. (Ghana Web)
