ASTM Committee F37 on Light Sport Aircraft

AERO Friedrichshafen 2011

This International Workshop on Electric Aircraft Standardization is the first-of-its-kind forum focused on discussing the technical, standards, and conformity assessment issues that will help facilitate routine certification in support of electric flight.

review today’s certified electric aircraft in flight,

investigate the emerging safety and performance issues, and

coordinate among regulators and industry to address technical standardization and research goals that will assist with safer aircraft and routine certifications.

The objective of the Workshop is to bring the electric aircraft industry together and discus the needs for standardizing technologies, for furthering research and methods of test for safety and performance, and for opening a continuing dialogue among (a) Civil Aviation Authorities, (b) researchers, and (c) the manufacturers/designers building the aircraft.

The forum will explore:
(a) The lessons learned from today’s certified electric aircraft;
(b) The needs of regulators for standard, flight performance data, and research
(c) The standards and other activities that can provide for safe, efficient designs that benchmark advancements and support regulatory certifications.

Manned Electric Flight is Here!

Certified experimental category electric aircraft and production-series powered gliders that utilize electric energy sources are flying. Industry and individuals are pushing the envelope of electric propulsion systems - integrating them with innovative airframe designs as we look to a future generation of aircraft that will be quieter, fuel efficient, and greener. The marketplace adoption of electric aircraft requires identifying the standards and related activities that can help overcome technical challenges and assist regulators in standardizing the safety and performance issues that lead to certifications.
